Over the past decade, we've dedicated our efforts to studying the mechanisms of cellular aging, identifying key contributors to lines and wrinkles, examining the epidermal cell messenger theory, and investigating the interactions between XEP-018 and Nav1.4.
What is epidermal cell messenger theory?
In 1986, it was found that botulinum toxin could block the communication between nerves and muscles by preventing the release of neural signals. This caused muscle relaxation, reducing facial tension and relieving pressure on the skin, which in turn allowed collagen to regenerate and improved skin elasticity.
What is XEP-018?
Activen XEP™-018 is a biomimetic peptide derived from the venom of the marine cone snail (Conus consors). It functions biologically as a modulator of neuromuscular transmission and a potent, selective blocker of voltage-gated sodium channels. Cosmetically, it provides an instant line-smoothing effect, giving the skin a smoother appearance.
The effectiveness of muscle relaxants in treating and preventing wrinkles has been well-established through decades of botulinum toxin injections, which are known for their potency and safety. By relaxing the muscles beneath the skin, wrinkles are quickly reduced, leading to improved facial appearance and enhanced psychological well-being over time.

What Is Mu-Conotoxin Cniiic?
Mu-Conotoxin Cniiic is a 22-amino acid peptide molecule categorized as a "Botox-in-a-jar" topical muscle relaxer. As a biomimetic peptide, it mimics the natural peptide found in the venom of the marine cone snail, *Conus consors*. Biologically, it serves as a modulator of neuromuscular transmission, acting as an instant line relaxer in cosmetic applications. Research has shown that a single application of 3% XEP-018 on 33 participants resulted in a noticeable and significant reduction in wrinkle depth and roughness just 2 hours after use.
What is Nav1.4 ？
NaV1.4 is predominantly expressed in skeletal muscle, accounting for over 90% of the sodium channels in adult muscle tissue. It plays a crucial role in the initiation and propagation of action potentials, which are essential for regulating skeletal muscle contraction.
How do XEP-018 and Nav1.4 work together?
A unique neuropeptide found in cone snail venom works by blocking NaV1 receptors on nerve endings, preventing muscle contractions. This action helps relax wrinkles and expression lines, providing a smoother appearance.
